Shadow of Pep Guardiola makes Carlo Ancelotti a man out of time at Bayern | Andy Brassell

The sacked manager has many fine attributes but could never live up to his predecessor and Wednesday’s defeat to Paris Saint-German was the final straw

When Bayern Munich came to London last March to face Arsenal, following one 5-1 victory and just about to register another, everything seemed rosy in the kingdom of FC Hollywood. Sure, their football in the Bundesliga had hardly been edge-of-the-seat stuff, but Carlo Ancelotti spoke confidently, almost bullishly, of his team before the game in the press room at the Emirates Stadium.

He talked of his side approaching their physical best, and of their “real energy”. It felt like his plan to take them back to Champions League glory – the reason that he was appointed to replace Pep Guardiola in the first place – was coming together at the right time. It felt like Bayern could be becoming Ancelotti’s team at last.

England opt for a ‘pick your mates’ policy as Stokes overshadows Ashes selections | Vic Marks

England put their trust in a group who know each other but they are light on openers and must also hope their talisman’s right hand heals in time

When the selection of Ben Stokes for the Ashes tour becomes headline news, something’s up. At the moment we are assuming – no more than that – Stokes will be available for the start of it. Sadly that depends on the investigations of the Avon and Somerset police and the state of his right hand.

Golf unlikely to follow NFL so expect a protest-free Presidents Cup | Ewan Murray

New Jersey’s Liberty National course does not seem a likely venue for anti-Donald Trump statements, although because of the recent protests there will be extra focus on what is largely a pointless event

It is the perfect or imperfect storm, depending on one’s outlook. The Presidents Cup does not create a flicker in the wider golfing consciousness through any given year, but this week focus will be intense.

The swell of sporting protest last weekend ordinarily would not resonate much in golf, commonly an individual sport, but this time it’s different for a tournament normally afforded little status or interest. A competition bearing the name of the president, which Donald Trump is even likely to attend, will see USA flags raised and an anthem sung when the opening ceremony takes place on Thursday.

Joe Root’s reluctance to bat No3 leaves England selectors in a tangle | The Spin

England are going to be casting for Ashes roles during their warm-up matches, which is a little close to opening night to be running auditions, but there is a simple solution

Sir Gubby Allen was not, in the delicate phrase of one of his biographers, a “naturally penitent man”. Allen, England captain and MCC president, was also the chair of selectors between 1955 and 1962. It was Allen who persuaded Peter May to recall Cyril Washbrook to play against Australia at Headingley in 1956. Washbrook was 41, and hadn’t played a Test in so long that he was serving as one of the selectors himself. “The press went to town,” Allen wrote, but Washbrook made 98, and England won. As Allen recalled it, the spectators raised three cheers for the chair of selectors after the match. Which must be one of the few recorded instances of a public display of gratitude for men who work one of the more thankless jobs in cricket.

England women look to move into new territory after the Sampson scandal | Suzanne Wrack

The huge media attention generated by the England manager’s sacking has demonstrated women’s football is now operating at a different level

As spring drew to a close, many opinion pieces sang about this being the breakthrough summer for women’s sport. With Euro 2017, the women’s Rugby World Cup and the cricket World Cup taking place unobscured by a major men’s competition, coupled with some of the most competitive England teams in recent history, expectations were rightfully high. And the sport did not disappoint. Thrilling performances took place in all three as coverage of women’s sport reached an all-time high. Each England team came away from this summer with their heads held high. Rightfully, the relevant sporting bodies hoped to capitalise on an increase in interest in their sports at the domestic level.

NYCFC’s ‘home’ game 110 miles from their temporary home ground reaffirmed the fact that one of the league’s star clubs are still without a permanent home

It was billed as a home game, but it was the loosest definition of the term. Even Patrick Vieira admitted as much. “We treated it like an away game,” the New York City FC head coach said.

Joseph Parker’s wish for Anthony Joshua fight leaves Fury out in the cold | Kevin Mitchell

The New Zealander believes Joshua will be easier to beat than the awkward Mancunian proved to be and is decamping to the UK to make the fight happen

Hughie Fury will not be getting a quick rematch against Joseph Parker – unless the Mancunian heavyweight’s promoter, Mick Hennessy, can deliver on his optimistic promise of having his points loss overturned, and the odds must be slim.

After winning over 12 close rounds at the Manchester Arena on Saturday night – and benefiting from outrageous 118-110 scores on two cards – to retain the WBO world title he inherited from Hughie’s cousin, Tyson, Parker said the British heavyweight he is way more interested in fighting is Anthony Joshua.

Marco Silva’s proactivity and patience are key to Watford transformation | Lawrence Ostlere

The anticipation of half-time changes by Swansea and being prepared to wait for his resulting new system to bed in while giving instructions from the sideline could be a defining weapon

How many other Premier League managers would have done what Marco Silva did? Watford were 1-0 up and looking comfortable against Swansea City on Saturday when half-time came. In the home dressing room at the Liberty Stadium, Paul Clement prepared two substitutions in an attempt to turn the game. In the away dressing room, Silva anticipated the changes and reacted by ditching the four-man defence Watford had used in every minute of the season so far to play three at the back.

“We changed at half-time as we know they will do this change to three up front,” Silva reflected. “They started to react in the last minutes of the first half. They changed in the second half to two strikers with [Jordan] Ayew in behind – three strong players to challenge in duels. We changed things in half-time as well, to prepare for this situation.”

Will skipping the anthem completely become the NFL's new normal?

The Steelers, Seahawks and Titans all decided to stay in the locker room and skip the national anthem completely on Sunday. Will other teams follow suit?

Whether they knew it or not the Pittsburgh Steelers, Seattle Seahawks and Tennessee Titans were following a plan drawn by college basketball’s greatest coach when they refused to come onto the field for the national anthem on Sunday. Federico Chiesa a chip off the old block as Serie A youngsters flourish | Paolo Bandini

The son of Enrico Chiesa shone in Fiorentina’s draw with Atalanta to further justify optimism in Italy about the young talent emerging there

The bar has always been set high for Federico Chiesa. At 19 years old, he is a fixture of Fiorentina’s starting XI and has already played one unofficial friendly with the Italian national team. And yet, during an interview with La Repubblica, he suggested it may be some time before he considers himself a top-flight footballer. “My dad once told me: you become a Serie A player when you have made at least 300 appearances,” he observed.

An outrageous standard, albeit one founded on personal experience. Federico’s father Enrico played 380 games in the domestic top-flight, representing Fiorentina but also the likes of Sampdoria, Parma and Lazio. Along the way, he won 17 caps for the Azzurri and was named Serie A’s player of the year in 1995-96 by the magazine Guerin Sportivo.

Bayer Leverkusen's identity crisis nearing an end as entertainers emerge | Andy Brassell

After a season close to the abyss, Bayer Leverkusen’s rebuilding job has begun in earnest this season and is slowly showing signs of promise

For a long time, we’ve known exactly what Bayer Leverkusen are about. They impress, they entertain, they qualify for Europe and achieve to a certain level without actually getting it over the line. The old ‘Neverkusen’ epithet from the Klaus Toppmöller days has endured well.

Last season, and the summer that followed, changed all that. The Roger Schmidt era, which had given Die Werkself a firm on-pitch identity, fell to pieces and the club dropped the ball badly in appointing Tayfun Korkut as his successor – at exactly the point where a strong personality was needed to galvanise the players. In between wan performances, poor results and players meeting angry fans to appease them, Leverkusen came worryingly close to the drop.

Sheffield United's derby delight prompts questions over Wednesday's attitude

As good as Sheffield United were in trouncing their Steel City neighbours 4-2, Sheffield Wednesday’s tendency to disappear in big games is a concern

With a few minutes remaining of the first Sheffield derby in five years, Chris Wilder congratulated and high-fived everyone on the United bench. By that point the job was done, the scoreline at 4-2 and Wednesday’s spirit crushed: this was United’s most comprehensive derby win in 25 years and the first time they have scored four at Hillsborough.

Unsurprisingly Wilder, a Blades fan who watched his first derby from the terraces 37 years ago, described it as the proudest moment of his career.

Diego Costa and the new Atlético. Same as the old Atlético | Sid Lowe

For the first time, Diego Simeone is playing the rotation game. It also reflects something deeper, something seen more as the beginning of a transition

At 9.30am, the same time they started serving breakfast at Atlético’s, Diego Costa walked into a Majadahonda clinic across the other side of Madrid, but he wasn’t going to be kept from them for long. He had barely been in the country 15 hours, touching down just before five on Friday, and he was only in the clinic 60 minutes or so, most of it spent getting reacquainted with familiar faces. There were no photos, shirt off, suckers on, thumbs up, and when he was asked if he had passed his medical he pointed to the doctor and said “I don’t know, he knows”, but he was beaming. He stopped for a snap with a Málaga fan nursing a broken and bandaged arm and leg, like something out of a cartoon, then climbed into the car and set off 33km round the M40.

Outside the Wanda Metropolitano some were still drinking hot chocolate and eating churros, offered in an attempt to get them there early ahead of the 1pm kick-off on Saturday, while others had moved on to beer. Not far away lay the plaques dedicated to Costa and everyone who had played for Atlético 100 times; he hadn’t seen his yet, but fans gathered taking photos. Inside, friends waited. As he had touched down the day before at Barajas – the only airport named after a member of the A Team – Costa said he was coming “home”. Tiago was at the gate, Diego Godín greeted him in the tunnel – “Welcome, my friend. You’re home now,” he tweeted – and Filipe Luís was delighted too. Afterwards, he said: “I’m immensely proud Diego has chosen Atlético.”

Newcastle Falcons flying high in Premiership after years of turbulence | Robert Kitson

It would be a landmark of genuine local significance should Dean Richards’ side beat London Irish on Friday and finish the weekend top of the Premiership

Exactly 20 years ago Newcastle Falcons were in the process of revolutionising English rugby. No club was quicker – thanks to Sir John Hall’s chequebook – to embrace the possibilities of professionalism and no side had ever lifted the domestic title within a year of being promoted. It lingers all the more clearly in the memory because the Falcons have achieved nothing like it since.

Erik Karlsson's Quotes About His New Bionic Foot Sound Kind Of Ominous

The Senators’ brand of hockey, a 1-3-1, neutral-zone clogging formation that forces the puck out wide and limits odd-man rushes at both ends of the ice, is aesthetically unappealing, to the point where you find yourself rooting against them in the postseason just so you don’t have to watch them anymore. Thursday night football: the science behind the NFL's toughest turnaround

Now that the NFL has a full slate of Thursday games, how hard is it for football players to recover and play on three days’ rest instead of six?

Running into other players at top speed is hard enough without cutting recovery time in half. Thursday night NFL games – called a ‘poopfest’ by Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman—present a challenge to players and coaching staffs as they try to prepare in three days rather than the standard six.

Critics, like Sherman, claim that the quality of play suffers when teams are left with less time to prepare a game plan. And though the NFL is quick to point out that injury rates are no greater for Thursday games, players also complain that for a league ostensibly concerned with safety, playing while fatigued heightens the risk of injury.

Bribery and kickbacks: the FBI's college basketball sting has only just begun

Hall of Fame coach Rick Pitino has become the first high-profile victim in the FBI’s investigation into college basketball corruption, but he won’t be the last

Rick Pitino, the Hall of Fame college basketball coach who over his 31-year head coaching career has led his teams to seven Final Fours and two national championships, has almost certainly coached his last game.

The University of Louisville placed Pitino, its figurehead for the last 16 years and the highest paid head coach in all of college basketball, on unpaid administrative leave Wednesday citing allegations of corruption detailed by the acting US attorney for the southern district of New York that implicated Pitino’s program and led to the arrest of 10 people including four assistant coaches at other major college basketball programs.

Rugby union still faces challenge to make skill match will at every level | Paul Rees

Outside of New Zealand not enough time is spent injecting players from a young age with the creative ability that could make rugby more fun

The day after Eddie Jones had sat in one of Twickenham’s few largely unadorned rooms and reflected on how he would like to see training grounds for age-group rugby turned into skilling fields, he was over the road at the Stoop watching two players turn back time as they looked to unpick the defence’s lock rather than stick a shoulder to the door.

Eden Hazard takes himself and Chelsea to another level with dazzling display | Dominic Fifield

Chelsea’s Belgian playmaker responded in style to Antonio Conte’s call to raise his game at the elite level and left Atlético Madrid trailing in his wake

It was about two minutes after the final whistle, while Antonio Conte and his victorious players were still massing to acknowledge their fans’ delirious celebrations up in the gods, when the television cameras focused in upon their man. Diego Costa was sitting among the Atlético Madrid dignitaries, initially wearing the same haggard, disbelieving look as those immediately around him, before sinking his head into his hands. It was an image to sum up the locals’ dismal night but, deep inside, even the departed striker must have admired everything his former team‑mates had done here.

Conte had always seen this contest as a means of gauging Chelsea’s real capabilities back in the elite, concerned as he was that even a year-long absence might have blunted their pedigree. In inflicting Atletico’s first home defeat to English opposition – and their first reverse in their new arena – the Premier League side have laid down a marker. The last time they travelled here, in the first leg of the 2014 semi-final, they had attempted merely to suffocate, eventually squeezing out a goalless draw.

Chelsea in extremis langs Atlético Madrid

Atlético Madrid en Chelsea leken in groep C van de Champions League elkaar in evenwicht te houden. In blessuretijd bepaalde Michy Batshuayi echter anders: 1-2.

Steph Curry On That "Unity" Sports Illustrated Cover: "That Was Terrible"

Steph Curry didn’t mince words when asked about the cover of this week’s issue of Sports Illustrated, on which was photoshopped front-and-center and arm-in-arm with Roger Goodell and LeBron James under the (bullshit) guise of “unity.”

Barcelona boekt in Lissabon tweede zege

Maybe This Is Why Everyone's Mad At NBA 2K18

Despite being this year’s installment of what the Steam store description calls “the highest rated annual sports title,” NBA 2K18 has a “Mostly Negative” rating with over 3,000 reviews and counting. I investigated. The psychedelic spectacle it unfurled unto me shocked me to the core of my guts. I’m speechless.

The worst-case scenario for the Laver Cup—a first attempt to construct an all-star game for men’s tennis, pitting the best players from Europe against the best players from everywhere else—was that it’d end up an elaborate, expensive excuse to smush nemeses Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal onto the same team for the…
