Tinkering to follow tactical fashion can put right players in wrong roles | Liam Rosenior

This season we’ve seen full-backs at centre-half or attacking midfielders as wing-backs but it is hard to perform when you’re not comfortable carrying out the duties asked of you

After a hectic start to this Premier League season, the first international break is upon us and managers are sweating over the fitness of their players on international duty, training grounds are much quieter than normal with only eight or nine players working in the week and clubs are analysing their opening three games in terms of their own performances but also the trends of other clubs that they are competing with.

Last year Chelsea won the title based on Antonio Conte’s 3-4-3 system which allowed players such as Eden Hazard, Pedro and Willian the freedom to cause damage in key areas high up the pitch and I’ve found it fascinating how many teams are adapting their own systems – often on a game-by-game process – from four at the back to three central defenders.

Will NBC's price hike end up hurting the Premier League's US expansion?

Until recently it was easier to watch the Premier League in the US than the UK. But now viewers must pay to watch many of the games online

As executive director of Upper 90, which sells soccer shoes, jerseys, apparel, equipment and teamwear online and at four stores in and near New York, Zac Rubin has a keen interest in the Premier League’s success in the United States. It is literally a part of business: store customers can watch any match they want on TV while shopping.

NBC plans to continue to air 250 of 380 Premier League matches live for free on one of several of its broadcast and cable channels this season. It is what is happening to the other 130 matches that has Rubin concerned. NBC had made those matches available online for free in the past – making it easier to watch the Premier League in the US than in the UK – but now viewers must pay. How many will?

Joe Root declaration freed West Indies from restraint of having to defend

England captain went for the win in second Test but played into West Indies’ hands while displaying an overreliance on Stuart Broad and Jimmy Anderson

“Same squad, different performance” is the message from the selectors after England’s startling defeat at Headingley. With surprising speed they announced the same 13 names in their squad for the decisive Lord’s Test against West Indies, which starts next Thursday. The most relieved man will be Tom Westley, who failed twice in Leeds, an outcome that inevitably reduces his chances of making the squad for Australia.

The Lord’s Test has everyone salivating after West Indies’ brilliant five‑wicket triumph, which leaves the series level at 1-1. Indeed within 24 hours Test cricket around the world has been given a welcome boost by dramatic wins for West Indies and for Bangladesh over Australia in Dhaka. Of these, West Indies’ victory at Headingley was the most unexpected.

US Open: Mixed emotions for the Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal roadshow | Kevin Mitchell

Swiss No3 seed happy despite taking five sets against an American teenager while Spain’s French Open champion is annoyed despite a much easier ride

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have survived many crises in their parallel careers, and both are relieved to remain on schedule for a semi-final showdown at the 2017 US Open after dealing with contrasting challenges in the first round. However, the Swiss, who had to go five sets, seems considerably more content than the Spaniard, who was back in the locker room after only minor inconveniences in his match.

The look on Federer’s face when the American teenager Frances Tiafoe stumbled inches from the line as he came within a few tantalising shots of what would have been the biggest upset of the year on Tuesday was reminiscent of the moment of incredulous joy when he came from 1-3 down in the fifth set of the Australian Open final this year to win his 18th major. And that after six months off the Tour recovering from knee surgery.

Pep Guardiola should be nurturing Raheem Sterling not spending more cash | Paul Wilson

Manchester City’s manager has the raw material so why is he not bringing the best out of such players rather than attempting to buy other clubs’ top performers like Alexis Sánchez?

The final days and hours of the transfer window seem to be conforming to the usual pattern, the one that makes everyone wonder why, if clubs can get so much done in so short a time, they could not have compressed all their business into a few selected weeks of the close season.

The possibility of Alexis Sánchez moving from Arsenal to Manchester City is one that already seems to have been around for several lifetimes and there are even claims the Arsenal players are now hoping it goes through because the Chilean’s attitude has become so disruptive. The end of the window on Thursday cannot come soon enough.
