Hamou, Nastase and Court – will tennis ever escape the dark ages? | Kevin Mitchell

Tennis players whether past or present need to realise that while everybody is entitled to an opinion these arguments are not about morality but tolerance

It is encouraging and correct that tennis players are prepared to comment on issues from homosexuality to sexual harassment, and occasionally politics. Sport doesn’t have to exist in a vacuum. It is not that their opinions matter more than those of everyone else but it is good to know they are not Daleks.

Maybe other sports will follow the example of Andy Murray and others who have spoken out here this week, for instance, about Margaret Court’s antediluvian outrage over gay marriage.

'God is not an American': the debacle that was USA's 1986 World Cup campaign

The US had to contend with hostile crowds in their own backyard and players not used to outdoor football as they attempted to make Mexico ‘86

Thirty-two years ago today, and a good half hour after arguably the most disappointing loss in US soccer history, a devastated Rick Davis sat slumped at his locker, head in hands. The Murdock Stadium locker room in Torrance, California, was silent. The United States had just been eliminated from contention for the 1986 World Cup after a 1-0 home defeat to Costa Rica.

“We can’t play much better than that,” a somber Davis said. “It’s a shame it wasn’t supposed to end that way. We were playing for US soccer – for its reputation and recognition in our country. It’s another setback. We missed a golden opportunity.”

Kevin Durant and the making of an unlikely NBA finals villain

More than 30 years ago, Bob McAdoo moved teams to win a title. He doesn’t understand the spite his fellow MVP has received after joining the Warriors

More than three decades before Kevin Durant became a Golden State Warrior, another 6ft 9in high-scoring, former NBA MVP joined the league’s most explosive team in the hope of winning a title. Bob McAdoo was not scorned for this. In fact, no one seemed to think it was a bad idea.

Instead, McAdoo – a three-time NBA scoring champion – signed with the Los Angeles Lakers from the New Jersey Nets before the 1981-82 season, embraced a secondary role to stars such as Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and gleefully scored 16 points in the clinching game of the following spring’s finals. And he would do it all over again.

Arsenal fans must consign factions to past after Wenger’s new deal | Chas Newkey-Burden

On balance the manager’s extended stay is welcome but changes will still be required behind the scenes – and in the Emirates Stadium stands

So the banners, the YouTube videos and the fly-over planes have failed. The “Wenger Out” campaign has been ferocious in recent months, even becoming a global meme, but, alas, the manager has agreed a two-year contract extension at Arsenal.

A new deal seemed improbable between February and April when Arsenal were losing against Watford, West Bromwich Albion and Crystal Palace in the league, and enduring two 5-1 humiliations against Bayern Munich. More and more fans began to demand Arsène Wenger’s head, swathes of empty seats became a feature of home matches, and the man himself seemed on the brink of tears in post-match pressers.

The rise and rise of Bangladesh cricket – what took them so long? | Tim Wigmore

With 160 million people, an insatiable zest for the game and improving infrastructure, Bangladesh loom as world cricket’s next major force

It was at the Adelaide Oval in 2015 that Bangladesh cricket’s rise became undeniable. With two full, straight and swinging deliveries, Rubel Hossain knocked England out the World Cup, ensuring Bangladesh’s quarter-final berth.

Ahmed Sajjadul Alam Bobby was there, just as he has been throughout Bangladesh’s journey, working in everything from logistics, tournament organising and marketing for the board since 1978. “Watching that game was a privilege,” he says. “Beating England in an away venue meant a lot.”
